It is smoke and ashes coming from wood fire in kitchens of women living under ‘Below Poverty Line’ since last 70 years. India got freedom 70 years ago but these underprivileged women still have no other option but to suffer from heart diseases, strokes, lung cancer and acute respiratory illnesses caused from uncleaned cooking fuels in open fire in their kitchens.

Then came “Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana,” PMUY is a scheme of the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas for providing LPG connections to women from Below Poverty Line (BPL) households. Under the scheme, 8 crores LPG connections are to be provided to BPL households only, preference would be given to SC/ST and weaker sections of society.

In Jan 2017, 1.6 crores gas connections had been provided. Till now 3.5 crores gas connections have been distributed by Indian government. ₹4800 crores have been allocated to provide basic facility of gas connection to every household till 2020.

The main purpose of PMUY is to free underprivileged women from health hazards and empower these women in real sense.

The eligible women candidates from BPL families can apply for the scheme by filling up the Ujjwala Yojana KYC application form (in prescribed format). The basic details such as Name, Contact details, Jan Dhan / Bank account number, Aadhar card number etc are required to fill in the application form.
